When Charlotte was awarded an expansion Triple-A International League franchise, the Southern League Charlotte Knights needed a temporary home. A short-term solution was found in Nashville, as the Double-A team shared Greer Stadium with the Triple-A American Association Nashville Sounds.
The Xpress were named in reference to freight trains that ran along the tracks beyond the ballpark's outfield wall. On the field, the Xpress were successful, with winning records in each of its two seasons in Nashville. However, the team only made the postseason in 1993, and after late-season call-ups left the roster barren of its top talent, the Xpress were swept out of the Southern League playoffs.
After its two-year stint in Nashville ended in 1994 and a failed attempt to relocate to Lexington (KY), the franchise found a new home in Wilmington (NC) and became the Port City Roosters for the 1995 season. That relocation mirrored the Xpress' duration in Nashville, as the Roosters packed up after two years and moved to its current home in Mobile, where the BayBears play today.
